Radiation lost their league-opener to the San Juan Blue Saturday, September 6th 2-0. Play was fairly evenly matched despite the fact that five Radiation players couldn’t participate due to injuries. Cookie Rocha played with her typical spunk in the loss.
Radiationthen beat the Sac United Pumas 2-1 Saturday, September 20th in Davis. Radiation scored two minutes into the game after Mallory Creamer was taken down in the box and Morgan Throckmorton sent the resulting PK into the back left corner of the net. A defensive struggle ensued, led by Kelsey Kornelly, Jessica Mendoza and Brooke Gary, until midway through the second half when Alexes Ramirez, with an assist from Melissa Tong, juked the Pumas’ keeper and tapped the ball in for another goal. Goalkeepers Christine Gilbertson and Megan Foster each had a save in the win
Cal Rush Open-CHAMPIONS!
August 30, 2008

The Davis Legacy U17 competitive team, Radiation, won the California Rush Open tournament last weekend.
After losing their opening game against Novato United 1-0, the team went on to beat the Solano United Bears 4-0. Melissa Tong set up the first scoring drive with a great ball sent deep into the corner of the field. Novato ’s keeper intercepted but bobbled the cross and Kelly Riestenberg tapped the ball back in front of the net where Mallory Creamer finished for the goal. Alexes Ramirez scored next early in the second half with an assist from Emily Bowers. Morgan Throckmorton and Kelsey Kornelly completed the scoring off a penalty kick and a corner kick, respectively. Goalkeeper Christine Gilbertson had two nice saves in the shutout.
In their next game Radiation also shut out the home team, Cal Rush, which had scored a total of 15 goals in their two previous games in the tournament. The first half was a defensive struggle led by Katrina Sabatier, Jessica Mendoza and Kornelly and aided by saves from Cookie Rocha, Mendoza and keeper Megan Foster. In the second half, with Cal Rush down a player due to a red card send-off, an energized Radiation went on the offensive. Midfielders Brooke Gary, Kilie Englehardt and Riestenberg were outstanding but the game remained scoreless until a beautiful free kick by Ramirez deflected off a Cal Rush player and into the goal. Not long later, Rocha assisted Bowers to seal the 2-0 win. Gilbertson and Kornelly each had a second-half save to preserve the shutout.
Injuries affected Radiation’s game plan during the championship game against the Walnut Creek Strikers. At one point Coach David Robertson put keeper Gilbertson on the field when he ran out of other substitutes. Nevertheless, Ashley Syme and Gary played tremendous defense, Ramirez assisted both Throckmorton and Rocha for goals and the final score was 2-1 after the Strikers made a PK late in the game.

"On Your Toes" Hannah Welker Memorial Tournament-Finalist!
September 27, 2008

The Davis Legacy U17 “comp” team, Radiation, came within a PK of winning the “On Your Toes” Hannah Welker Memorial Tournament in Cupertino.
Despite excellent shots on goal by Alexes Ramirez, Kilie Englehardt and Toni Darragh, and tremendous defense by Shay Moynahan and Jessica Mendoza, Radiation’s first game against the Fremont Fury ended in a 0-0 tie. Keeper Megan Foster had three saves.
The scoring started in the first minute of the second game when Ramirez—held by her leg by the Central Valley Avalanche’s keeper—passed the ball to Mallory Creamer who tapped it in for the goal. A couple of minutes later Kelsey Kornelly redirected a corner kick from Ramirez into the net off her knee. Ramirez then schooled the Avalanche keeper for playing outside the box by chipping the ball over her head for two more goals, one assisted by Darragh and one by Englehardt. In the second half Brooke Gary played outstanding defense and Foster had another save to preserve the 4-0 shut-out.
Kornelly and Englehardt each scored a goal against the Manteca Extreme, assisted by Morgan Throckmorton and Emily Bowers, respectively. Katrina Sabatier and Melissa Tong were relentless in the mid-field and Foster had four saves in the 2-0 win.
Radiation started out strong in the championship game against the home club, North Valley/San Jose, with two goals early in the first half, one by Creamer and one by Bowers, both assisted by Ramirez. But NVSJ scored a PK just before half-time and two more goals early in the second half. Ashley Syme, Cookie Rocha, Creamer and Englehardt took good shots on goal later but it wasn’t until a hard shot by Ramirez was deflected into the goal by a NVSJ player that the game was tied up at 3-3. Christine Gilbertson and Foster each had two saves during regulation. Foster started the ensuing shoot-out with a great diving save and the teams were still tied after five penalty shots had been taken by each. But, when the seventh round of PKs was over, Radiation went home in second place.
